memoria aquí y ahora del último año

Memoria aquí y ahora del último año —— 以此纪念2008年奥运会的夏天,以及后来跨越了漫长冬季的这一年。

The Isles of Greece

THE isles of Greece! the isles of Greece!
Where burning Sappho loved and sung,
Where grew the arts of war and peace,---
Where Delos rose and Phoebus sprung!
Eternal summer gilds them yet,
But all, except their sun, is set.

The Scian and the Teian muse,
The hero's harp, the lover's lute,
Have found the fame your shores refuse;
Their place of birth alone is mute
To sounds which echo further west
Than your sires' "Islands of the Blest."

The mountains look on Marathon---
And Marathon looks on the sea;
And musing there an hour alone,
I dream'd that Greece might yet be free
For, standing on the Persians' grave,
I could not deem myself a slave.

A king sat on the rocky brow
Which looks on sea-born Salamis;
And ships, by thousands, lay below,
And men in nations;---all were his!
He counted them at break of day---
And when the sun set, where were they?

And where are they? and where art thou,
My country? On thy voiceless shore
The heroic lay is tuneless now---
The heroic bosom beats no more!
And must thy lyre, so long divine,
Degenerate into hands like mine?

'Tis something, in the dearth of fame,
Though link'd among a fetter'd race,
To feel at least a patriot's shame,
Even as I sing, suffuse my face;
For what is left the poet here?
For Greeks a blush---for Greece a tear.

Must we but weep o'er days more blest?
Must we but blush?---Our fathers bled.
Earth! render back from out thy breast
A remnant of our Spartan dead!
Of the three hundred grant but three,
To make a new Thermopylae.

What, silent still, and silent all?
Ah! no; the voices of the dead
Sound like a distant torrent's fall,
And answer, "Let one living head,
But one arise,---we come, we come!"
'Tis but the living who are dumb.

In vain---in vain: strike other chords;
Fill high the cup of Samian wine!
Leave battles to the Turkish hordes,
And shed the blood of Scio's vine!
Hark! rising to the ignoble call---
How answers each bold bacchanal!

You have the Pyrrhic dance as yet,
Where is the Pyrrhic phalanx gone?
Of two such lessons, why forget
The nobler and the manlier one?
You have the letters Cadmus gave---
Think ye he meant them for a slave?

Fill high the bowl with Samian wine!
We will not think of themes like these!
It made Anacreon's song divine;
He served---but served Polycrates---
A tyrant; but our masters then
Were still, at least, our countrymen.

The tyrant of the Chersonese
Was freedom's best and bravest friend;
That tyrant was Miltiades!
Oh! that the present hour would lend
Another despot of the kind!
Such chains as his were sure to bind.

Fill high the bowl with Samian wine!
On Suli's rock, and Parga's shore,
Exists the remnant of a line
Such as the Doric mothers bore;
And there, perhaps, some seed is sown,
The Heracleidan blood might own.

Trust not for freedom to the Franks---
They have a king who buys and sells:
In native swords and native ranks,
The only hope of courage dwells:
But Turkish force and Latin fraud
Would break your shield, however broad.

Fill high the bowl with Samian wine!
Our virgins dance beneath the shade---
I see their glorious black eyes shine;
But, gazing on each glowing maid,
My own the burning tear-drop laves,
To think such breasts must suckle slaves.

Place me on Sunium's marble steep---
Where nothing, save the waves and I,
May hear our mutual murmurs sweep:
There, swan-like, let me sing and die;
A land of slaves shall ne'er be mine---
Dash down yon cup of Samian wine!

Apocalypse

The words are put into the mouth of the statesman Perikles as he delivered the eulogy for Athenian warriors who died early in the war. The following excerpts convey a contemporary view of Athens:

This land of ours, in which the same people have never ceased to dwell in an unbroken line of successive generations, they by their valor transmitted to our times a free state…   we ourselves here assembled, who are now for the most part still in the prime of life, have further strengthened the empire in most respect, so that it is sufficient for itself both in peace and in war…

We live under a form of government which does not emulate the institutions of our neighbors; on the contrary, we are ourselves a model which some follow, rather than the imitators of other peoples. It is true that our government is called a democracy, because its administration is in the hands, not of the few, but of the many….

We have provided for the spirit many relaxations from toil; we have games and sacrifices regularly throughout the year and homes fitted out with good taste and elegance; and the delight we each day find in these things drives away sadness. And our city is so great that all the products of all the earth flow in upon us, and ours is the happy lot to gather in the good fruits of our own soil….

We are also superior to our opponents in our system of training for warfare….

We are lovers of beauty yet with no extravagance and lovers of wisdom yet without weakness. Wealth we employ rather as an opportunity for action than as a subject for boasting; and with us it is not a shame for a man to acknowledge poverty, but the greater shame is for him not to do his best to avoid it.

April Snow

Ann Arbor,
Snow comes in April.
Mildly, concomitant none.
Off-shore Huron, þæt slings and arrows,
Some impression engraved Ontario Hogtown.

Yet, thou continue,
Amid burgeoning sprouts,
Through my breath,
Over shamrac grid,
Resting.

Decending peacefully in peace, bow thy last bow.
Farewell floppy gloom,
Vow the Hearts of Oak, debut the Spring.

Travel Diary

I came back from Lhasa yesterday and am restoring myself from the odyssey. Four days round-trip on railroad were tedious. Anyway, there is compensation in Lhasa. The holy city is becoming secular and commercial. You can find classy bars and fancy souvenir shops along the Barkhor Street.

My itinerary include three days in Lhasa visiting Jokhang Temple, Photala Palace, Roplinka and shopping on Barkhor Street, one day to Sakya Monastery cross Yarlong Tsangpo river and one day to Lake Yumtso through Mt. Nantsing Tanggula pass.

Impact from inland China is almost externally ubiquitous.   The city of Lhasa in many ways looks like a Southern Chinese municipality.    Young Tibetans are rejecting some stoic traditions like diet taboo of aquatic dishes and so forth.    Many Lama Monks are not duteous in my eyes. They dare point to Budda statue and altar with single index finger and trample on monastery doorsill, which behaviors can be considered as blasphemy if committed by visitors or prilgramers. However, there is no doubt that they are dedicating themselves to sacrosanct spiritual life.

The so called highland effect is light. Few unlucky people including the couple friends traveling with me were suffering from moderate syndromes. However, the second day back from Tibet was spent in a dizzy consciousness.

As my raptures fade, I am expecting one day to trek along Mt. Kailash and sight the magnificence of Yarlong Tsangpo Canyon …

The beautiful girl is in Ling Kingdom,
Queen Zholmo is resplendent and bright.
Her step forward is worth 100 strong horses,
Her step backward is worth 100 thriving sheep.
She is warmer than the sun in winter,
And cooler than the moon in summer.
She is more fragrant than flowers in bloom,
Surrounded by bees in adulation.
There are many beauties in this world,
But only she is a true match for the king.
King Gesar has gone to the north,
His queen is alone and unprotected.
